Supports PNG, JPG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF (max 50MB)

How to Use

  1. Drop or click to upload one or more images (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG). Up to 20 files at once.
  2. Pick the target format: JPG (small + universal), PNG (lossless + transparency), WebP/AVIF (modern + small), BMP, or ICO (favicons).
  3. Conversion keeps the full resolution; JPG, WebP and AVIF are saved at a fixed 92% quality. Need a smaller file or an exact size? Use the Image Compressor.
  4. Click Convert and download a single file or all results as a ZIP.
Tip: WebP and AVIF give the smallest files for the web; JPG is the safest universal choice; PNG keeps transparency; ICO makes favicons.
Image Format Guide & Technical Info

About Image Converter

An image converter changes a picture from one file format to another — for example JPG to PNG, PNG to WebP, or HEIC-decoded photos to a universal JPG. Our converter handles JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, AVIF, GIF and SVG entirely in your browser, so you can switch formats in seconds without installing software or uploading anything to a server.

Each format is built for a different job. JPG is tiny and universal but has no transparency; PNG is lossless with a perfect alpha channel; WebP and AVIF are modern formats that beat JPG on size while keeping quality. Picking the right one — and converting in a single click — is the difference between a fast, compatible image and a bloated or broken one.

Everything runs locally through the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, which makes the tool safe for private photos, scanned documents and confidential design assets. You can convert a single file or batch dozens at once and download them all as a ZIP.

Convert Images for Specific Platforms

Web & WordPress

Convert PNG and JPG uploads to WebP before publishing: lighter pages load faster. In our own test WebP brought PNG screenshots to about half their size. Check that your site's platform accepts WebP.

Email & Office Documents

Many email clients and older Office versions choke on WebP or AVIF. Convert those to JPG or PNG so attachments and embedded images display everywhere, from Outlook to Google Docs.

Logos, Icons & Transparency

Need a transparent background? Convert to PNG or WebP, which both support an alpha channel. JPG flattens transparency to white, so avoid it for logos, stickers and UI icons.

Social Media & Marketplaces

An upload form that rejects WebP will usually take JPG. Convert WebP exports to JPG before uploading; iPhone HEIC photos go through the separate HEIC to JPG tool.

Technical Deep Dive: Format Comparison

JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF — When to Convert to Each

Format Description
JPG / JPEG Lossy, no transparency, supported everywhere. Convert to JPG for photographs, email attachments and any platform that rejects modern formats.
PNG Lossless with full transparency. Convert to PNG for logos, screenshots, line art and anything needing a clean alpha channel. Larger than lossy formats.
WebP Compresses better than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency and animation. The best all-round choice for the web.
AVIF Usually smaller than WebP, with excellent HDR color. Best for large images where size matters most; fewer programs open it.

Quality, Transparency & Compatibility

Converting between formats involves trade-offs. Keep these rules in mind:

  • JPG → PNG keeps quality but increases size and cannot recover lost detail
  • PNG → JPG shrinks the file but flattens transparency to a solid color
  • Any → WebP/AVIF gives the smallest modern files with transparency intact
  • Quality 80–85 is the sweet spot for JPG and WebP photos
  • Converting a lossy file never restores data already discarded

When in doubt, convert from the highest-quality original you have, and only down-convert once at the end of your workflow.

Formulas and Algorithms

Format conversion is governed by a few simple principles of encoding and color.

Compression Ratio Ratio = (Original − Converted) / Original × 100%

How much smaller the output is after converting and re-encoding.

Quality Factor Impact Size ≈ Base × e^(k × q)

For JPG/WebP, file size grows roughly exponentially with the quality factor q (0–1).

Bits Per Pixel BPP = (Bytes × 8) / (Width × Height)

Encoding efficiency — the fewer bits per pixel at the same look, the better.

Alpha Flattening C_out = C_fg × α + C_bg × (1 − α)

When converting to JPG, transparent pixels are blended onto a background color.

Color Channels RGB = 3 ch · RGBA = 4 ch · Grayscale = 1 ch

Dropping the alpha channel (RGBA→RGB) is what removes transparency in JPG.

Real-World Use Cases

Website Performance

A blog converts its PNG screenshots to WebP. In our test of 10 screenshots, WebP came out at 49–77% of the PNG size.

Result: faster pages, higher PageSpeed score

WebP images from the web

A user saves a WebP picture from a website and converts it to JPG so an older editor or an upload form accepts it.

Result: a JPG at the same resolution that opens in any program

Logo with Transparency

A designer converts a flat JPG mockup to PNG to add a transparent background for overlays.

Result: clean alpha channel, reusable asset

Marketplace Listings

A seller converts WebP exports to JPG because the marketplace rejects WebP uploads.

Result: listings accepted on first try

Email Attachments

A team converts AVIF graphics to PNG so they render in every email client.

Result: images visible for all recipients

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does converting an image reduce its quality?

A: Converting to a lossless format like PNG preserves quality. Converting to or re-saving a lossy format like JPG or WebP can lose a little detail. Always start from the best original you have.

Q: How do I convert without losing transparency?

A: Convert to PNG or WebP — both support an alpha channel. Avoid JPG, which flattens transparency onto a solid background color.

Q: Are my images uploaded to a server?

A: No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

Q: Can I convert many images at once?

A: Yes. Drop multiple files, choose one target format, and download all the converted results together as a ZIP.

Q: What is the best format for the web?

A: WebP offers the best balance of small size, quality and transparency for most web images. AVIF is even smaller for hero images, while JPG remains the safest universal choice.

Q: How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

A: Use our dedicated HEIC to JPG tool to decode iPhone photos, or convert here once they are in a standard format. The result is a universal JPG that opens everywhere.

Q: Why is there no quality slider?

A: Conversion saves at a fixed high quality (92%), so the picture stays as it was. To make a file smaller or fit an exact size, use the Image Compressor — that is where quality is set.

Q: Should I convert PNG to JPG?

A: Only if the image is a photograph and you do not need transparency. JPG is much smaller for photos, but PNG is better for logos, text and screenshots.

Q: Will converting change the image dimensions?

A: No. Conversion only changes the file format, not the pixel width and height. Use the Image Resizer if you also need to change dimensions.

Q: Is there a file size or count limit?

A: You can convert up to 20 files at once. Because everything runs locally, the practical limit depends on your device memory rather than a server quota.
